Who makes Communion?

No, I don’t mean the priest and his prayers and signs
creating the body of Christ;
I mean literally, first of all, who makes the wafers?

Is there a company that specialises in Mass-related cuisine?
Do they package them up all together in big plastic bags
or lay them neatly in little boxes?
Do they have to make out invoices and delivery dockets
to be signed and filed by someone in the Parochial House
(10 x Packs Holy Communion)?
How much does it cost?
(Surely it has to cost something,
or is the whole operation run by some obscure charity?)

Is it made in a factory,
each one just another piece of wafer on the conveyor belt?
Or is it handmade, with care and devotion, the creator pouring
every effort into making it worthy of the transformation ahead?
Is it a job or a calling?
Does the factory worker/handmade wafer maker believe
in the body and blood of Jesus Christ?
When they pop it into their mouths at Mass do they actually taste a chunk of flesh
or just another piece of wafer, one of many, which they themselves brought into being?

Who makes Communion?
I wrote this in August 2011 after being at my friend's grandmother's anniversary Mass.

I have wondered this before. Since I wasn't raised Catholic, it's always been a little odd to me to think of that little dry thing actually becoming the body of Christ, but I've never taken it myself. I've had communion at church, but since it wasn't catholic church it never occurred to me to think of it as Christ's actual flesh.

Very interesting, and thought provoking too.
